Operating Procedures
- All persons using the range are required to sign in and out in the Log Book. Each entry in the Log Book must be completed, and must record the person’s name, the date, time of arrival and departure, type of firearm used (pistol or rifle), and caliber of firearm used.
- All SRGC members are required to take the Massachusetts Firearms Safety Course. No member is permitted to use any SRGC range until the member completes the Massachusetts Firearms Safety Course.
- All SRGC members are required to take a minimum 3-hour range safety course taught by a Certified Range Safety Officer. No member is permitted to use any SRGC range until the member completes a 3-hour range safety course taught by a Certified Range Safety Officer. During the 3-hour range safety course, the Certified Range Safety Officer shall confirm that the member possess any required license under state law required for the member’s possession and use of the member’s firearm.
- Each member is responsible for ensuring that all persons using the range have in their possession any license required by state law for shooting and possession of the firearm used by the shooter on the range. Any member who brings a guest to SRGC must also confirm that the guest has any applicable license for the firearm used by the guest. Any license required by state law shall be produced at the request of any Certified Range Safety Officer.
- All SRGC events must be closely monitored by Certified Range Safety Officers.
- Use of the 50-yard range is limited to pistol caliber ammunition (no greater than .45 caliber), rimfire ammunition (.22 caliber and .17 caliber), muzzleloader firearms, airguns, and shotguns.
- The use of pistol caliber ammunition above .45 caliber (.454 caliber, .460 caliber, and .500 caliber) in any firearm is strictly prohibited.
- Rifle firing pistol caliber ammunition no greater than .45 caliber is permitted. Examples of permissible ammunition include: 9mm, .32 cal., .40 S&W, .357 Sig., .44 cal., and .45 ACP. Rifle firing any ammunition greater than .45 caliber is strictly prohibited.
- Rifle firing .45 Long Colt target load ammunition is permitted. Rifle firing .45 Colt non-target load ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- The use of pistol magnum cartridges in a rifle is strictly prohibited.
- The use of centerfire rifle caliber ammunition (e.g. .223, .243, .308, 30-06, 5.56mm, 7.62x39mm, .50 BMG) is strictly prohibited.
- The use of incendiary, tracer, or armor piercing ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- No prohibited ammunition is allowed on the range and each member is responsible for ensuring that no person using the range is in possession of any prohibited ammunition. Any member who brings a guest to SRGC must confirm that the guest uses only permitted ammunition.
- Any member who discovers the possession or use of prohibited ammunition on the range, or discovers any prohibited ammunition cartridge on the range, shall immediately inform a Certified Range Officer or any Executive Officer or Director. Any member who fails to report the known possession or use of prohibited ammunition will be expelled from SRGC without reimbursement of membership dues.
- Each Executive Officer, Director, and/or duly appointed member, shall review and monitor the range and parking lot surveillance video on a regular basis as deemed necessary and prudent based upon usage of the ranges and SRGC events.
- Any Executive Officer, Director, or duly appointed member, who suspects, learns, or is informed of a possible Rule violation, shall immediately secure and maintain any pertinent video for review by the Board of Directors.
Range Rules for the 50 Yard Range
General Rules
- All persons using the range are required to sign in and out in the Log Book. Each entry in the Log Book must be completed, and must record the person’s name, the date, time of arrival and departure, type of firearm used (pistol or rifle), and caliber of firearm used.
- No shooting before 9:00 a.m. All shooting must cease when the parking lot light comes on at dusk.
- All doors and gates are to remain locked when no club members are present to prevent unauthorized use of club property.
- Members must be in possession of a current membership card or pin when using ranges.
- Members must be in possession of any license required by state law for shooting and possession of the firearm used by the shooter on the range. Any license required by state law shall be produced at the request of any Certified Range Safety Officer.
- Every member is authorized to act in order to enforce the range safety rules and ensure safe firearm handling. No member observing a rule infraction or unsafe firearm handling practice is allowed to let it go uncorrected.
Safety Rules and Regulations
- All firearms are assumed to be loaded and should be treated as such.
- No alcohol in any form will be allowed on the range and use of the range after consuming alcohol is prohibited.
- All members are responsible for reading and adhering to signs, markings and rules posted on the range.
- All members must immediately obey firing line commands, including but not limited to cease fire.
- Firearms will not be loaded until the shooter is on the firing line. Firearms will be unloaded when carried to and from the firing line. All firearms shall also be carried to and from the firing line with the actions open unless the firearm is housed in a case.
- Firing is permitted only in one direction-downrange at the backstops. No firing is permitted out of line of the backstops.
- The muzzles of all firearms must be aimed downrange whenever a shooter is at the firing line. At all other times the muzzle of a firearm, loaded or not, must be pointed in a safe direction.
- Firing is only permitted from underneath covered shooting positions.
- Do not raise firearms above the target line. Shoot only at target directly in front of shooting position. Cross firing is prohibited.
- Only firearms in good condition with the proper ammunition will be used. No fully automatic firearms of any kind are permitted.
- The walking on or disruption of any berm or range backstop is prohibited.
- All ranges are to be kept policed in a reasonably decent manner. All members and guests will pick up all shell casings when finished shooting and dispose of them in the proper receptacles.
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult member while on any range.
- All members are requested to help/assist novice shooters or new members with the use of firearms and instruct such members concerning club range rules when appropriate.
Ammunition

- Rifle firing .45 Colt target load ammunition is permitted. Rifle firing .45 Colt non-target load ammunition is strictly prohibited! When using .45 Colt ammunition in a rifle, Target Loads only!
- The use of pistol caliber magnum ammunition in a rifle is strictly prohibited!
- The possession or use of any centerfire rifle caliber ammunition is strictly prohibited!
- The possession or use of incendiary, tracer, or armor piercing ammunition is strictly prohibited!
- Each member is responsible for ensuring that no person using the range is in possession of any prohibited ammunition. Any member who brings a guest must confirm that the guest uses only permitted ammunition.

Protective Equipment
- All persons on ranges must wear eye and ear protection. Acceptable eye protection includes any shooting glasses, goggles, or eyeglasses with shatterproof lenses.
- Ear protection is required at all time while on the firing line.
Targets
- Targets must be placed in the center of the target frame. Only 1 target per frame set between 0 and 40 yards from the firing line. A maximum of 2 targets per frame may be placed vertically in the center of target frames set between 40 and 50 yards. No target is to overlap the target frame. Be sure that the appropriate target frame is used at the appropriate distance.
- All targets must be placed such that all passed through and missed shots impact the backstop no less than 2 feet from the base of the backstop. Only authorized targets will be used.
- Tin cans, bottles, shot guns shells and shell boxes, etc., are forbidden!
- Always be certain that the bullets hit the designated target impact area.
Guest Policy
- Each member is allowed 2 shooting guests on the 50-yard range. The member must ensure that all guests are properly logged in and out of range log book. The member must directly supervise and coach their guests at all times. A member and guest(s) are allowed 1 shooting station only.
- A member who brings a guest to SRGC must confirm that the guest has any applicable license for the firearm used by the guest.
- All members are responsible for their guests and must have them under direct supervision at all times.
- Members are responsible for the actions of their guests. If any guest violates any club rule, the member will be held responsible!
Firearm Licenses
- Each member is responsible for ensuring that all persons using the range have in their possession any license required by state law for shooting and possession of the firearm used by the shooter on the range.
- Any member who brings a guest to SRGC must also confirm that the guest has any applicable license for the firearm used by the guest.
- Any license required by state law shall be produced at the request of any Certified Range Safety Officer.
Violations of Range Rules
- SRGC enforces a “no tolerance policy” concerning violation of SRGC’s operating procedures or range safety rules, such violators will be expelled from SRGC without reimbursement of membership dues.
- Any member who fails to report the known possession or use of prohibited ammunition on the range will be expelled from SRGC without reimbursement of membership dues.
- Any person who is denied the use of the ranges by a Range Officer may appeal to the Board of Directors. Until such time as an appeal is heard by the Board of Directors, the decision of the Range Officer is final.
THE FAILURE OF ANY SAFETY RULE, INCLUDING “COMMON SENSE,” TO BE LISTED DOES NOT EXCLUDE IT FROM BEING A GOOD PRACTICE AND BEING REQUIRED ON THIS RANGE.
